BIENNIAL 2026 FRAMING INSTRUCTIONS & ALTERNATIVES

THE BOSTON PRINTMAKERS NORTH AMERICAN PRINT BIENNIAL
FRAMING INSTRUCTIONS & ALTERNATIVE FRAMING OPTIONS

The 2026 prospectus states:
Framing: All work must be framed in simple (Nielsen-like) black metal or black wooden frames, no more than 1⁄2” thick on the front edge (front-facing profile). All frames should have Plexiglas, and a standard white or off-white window mat, minimum 3 inches wide. Your print must be securely mounted to the backing board. Frames must be ready to hang with wire or D-rings. Place your framed print into a clear plastic bag before boxing.

Alternative Framing: Where appropriate, due to size or aesthetics, these directions may be amended and must be included in your entry on the CaFE site. Please type a clearly explained description of special hanging instructions in your CaFE submission.
With your acceptance letter, you will receive labeling forms, detailed packing and shipping instructions, and a loan agreement to complete and sign. If using an alternative framing method, we require detailed instructions and all necessary hardware to be included in your shipping package with your artwork and paperwork.

Aesthetics: Some artists float, mount, and encase prints. All are acceptable as long as work is secure, glazed with plexi, and fully protected to avoid shifting in frames.
Color variation of framing materials, invisible framing, and mounting on panel, canvas, or aluminum are all acceptable with description (for juror and gallery to review) and necessary hardware provided for installation.

EXAMPLES of Alternative to Framing Instructions:
Paper sizes with a longest dimension approaching 48” are eligible for alternative framing methods and do not have to be framed.

Strong Magnet and Thumbnail System: Experiment with magnet strength and number of magnets needed to safely and securely install your work. Include all items needed for installation and detailed instructions.

French Hooks and Alternative Wall Mounting Hardware: Experiment with installation before sending, document setting up and securing hook device, and write detailed instructions. Include all items needed for installation.

L-Pins and Plexiglas: Boston Printmakers has a good supply of L-pins (which are now harder to find). If using L-pins and Plexiglas, you must include a 3/16 inch foam core backing cut to the same size as Plexiglas.

Mounted and 3-Dimensional Work: Experiment with hardware and backing, checking for balance, weight bearing, and appearance (especially how the work lies firmly against the wall), no gaps.

For Books: for small to medium-sized books, the gallery has library cabinets and sculpture stands. For large books: Send book stands or custom hardware to display books, and in your submission be accurate when recording the size of the book on display (in the position of display). Include detailed instructions and photo documentation of book on display, and if handling is allowed, please note in the instructions. We will provide white gloves.

Free Standing/Sculptural Works are Encouraged: Experiment with sturdiness and positioning. Take photos and include all hardware items needed for installation. Write detailed instructions.

Alternative Adhesives for Wall Mounting: NO ADHESIVES ARE ALLOWED beyond 3M tape.

ABSOLUTE RESTRICTIONS: The ceiling is off limits, no wires, strings, cords, or lines used for suspension. Works designated to hang on walls cannot exceed 6 feet (60 inches/ 153cm) in width.

Methods not mentioned above (i.e., suspended on wire or line, animated/video submissions) should be shared and reviewed by Biennial organizers at biennial2026@bostonprintmakers.org in advance of making your application on CaFE.
